Mi Casa, Su Casa

Mi Casa, Su Casa was created for an Electronic Cottage compilation series called EC Splits. The idea was pairing two artists active on the Electronic Cottage group on Facebook. Curator Hal McGee paired Mick Magic and myself and Mick’s idea was the Mi Casa, Su Casa theme.

While Mick’s approach was to sample rooms around his home and create pieces based on those sounds, my approach was taking a conversation I had one afternoon with my mother about the homes she grew up in. I took the conversation and pulled out phrases of audio then randomly placed them across the track’s 30-minute timeline.

For the music, I improvised several tracks of Korg Wavestate performances. I was going for a feeling of an alien spaceship accessing my mother’s childhood memories without regard to linear time, dipping in and out of her memory pool.

The EC Split compilation album is available here: https://halmcgee.bandcamp.com/album/ec-split-25

Here’s the track along with a flip booklet I designed. I recommend clicking play and then flipping through the book in full screen mode, following along with my mother’s memories of her childhood in the 1940’s in Logan, Utah, USA.
