GAJOOB Review by Bryan Baker, 11/7/23:
A Harmonious Blend of Melody, Jangle, and Nostalgia.
Kool Kat Musik has a knack for discovering and showcasing distinctive talent, and Ian M. Bailey’s third release on the label, “We Live In Strange Times,” is a testament to this. Teaming up once again with Scotland’s songsmith and Cosmic Rough Rider Daniel Wylie, Bailey delivers an album rich in melody, hooks, and a unique blend of musical influences.
Recorded and produced at Bailey’s home studio, “Small Space Studios,” the album is a melodic tour-de-force. The 12 co-written tracks are a harmonious blend of Bailey’s trademark 6 & 12 string Rickenbacker jangles, bass, drums, keys, and harmonies, all provided by Bailey himself. Alan Gregson’s additions of string sections, Hammond, Rhodes piano, and lap steel create a rich tapestry that further enhances the album’s musical depth.
“We Live In Strange Times” showcases Bailey’s ability to channel the musical inspirations of greats like The Beatles, The Byrds, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Gene Clark, The Moody Blues, and Eric Burdon’s War into his work. Yet, Bailey’s individuality shines through, making the album more than just a homage to these legends.
Standout tracks like “It’s Summer Rain” and the titular “We Live In Strange Times” are beautiful examples of Bailey’s songwriting prowess. The Beatles’ influence is evident, extending even to the sitar sounds on “Mother Nature.” Bailey also ventures into more progressive territory with the instrumental track “She Waltzes With the Devil,” a piece that adds an intriguing dimension to the album.
However, it’s not just the music that stands out in Bailey’s latest offering. The album’s title, “We Live In Strange Times,” is a reflection of the current global climate and resonates deeply with listeners. It’s a gentle reminder that music can be an escape, a source of comfort, and a beacon of hope in uncertain times.
In conclusion, “We Live In Strange Times” is a well-crafted album that demonstrates Bailey’s ability to blend nostalgic influences with his distinctive style. Despite its roots in the past, the album feels fresh and relevant, making it a must-listen for any fan of melodic, jangle-pop music.
Watch for the album’s release 24 November 2023.
