(CD, 2024) No.5261

GAJOOB Review by Bryan Baker:

A Triumphant Return to Form

As a devoted fan of Rich Arithmetic since the “Cambridge” cassette graced the pages of GAJOOB in 1991, the release of “Pushbutton Romance” is not only a nostalgic journey but also a reaffirmation of Richard Horton’s enduring artistry. This album, released on February 23, 2024, encapsulates the essence of Rich Arithmetic’s musical evolution, blending intricate instrumentation with deeply personal lyrics.

The album opens with “An Introduction to the Parents,” immediately pulling the listener into a soundscape rich with May May Gong’s evocative cello arrangements. This instrumental depth is a recurring theme throughout the album, adding layers of emotional resonance that are both captivating and immersive.

“Battered & Broke” and “You Are Always Right” stand out as prime examples of Horton’s collaborative genius. Marvin Hunt’s electric and slide guitar works, coupled with Ann Hunt’s backing vocals and stand-up bass, create an intricate interplay that brings these tracks to life. The raw emotion conveyed through these collaborations underscores the album’s thematic continuity, delivering a potent mix of vulnerability and strength.

One of the album’s crown jewels, “Bend the Arc,” boasts a songwriting collaboration between Stewart Lyman, Charlie Maliszewski, Heidi Mosbarger, and Horton himself. Maliszewski’s harmonica and harmony vocals add a rootsy charm that enhances the track’s introspective quality. This song, much like the entire album, showcases Rich Arithmetic’s ability to fuse various musical influences seamlessly, creating an auditory experience that feels both innovative and familiar.

“Thema Toh Selah” is another standout, featuring haunting harmony vocals by May May Gong and compelling drum work by Dan Dean. This track perfectly encapsulates the album’s exploration of complex emotional landscapes, with its sophisticated arrangements echoing the introspective nature of Horton’s lyrics.

“Lovesville” and “Lullabye for Lola” further highlight Gong’s cello contributions, providing a lush, orchestral backdrop that complements Horton’s versatile instrumentation. These tracks exemplify the album’s meticulous craftsmanship, where every note and arrangement serves a purpose in building a cohesive narrative.

Throughout “Pushbutton Romance,” the diversity of contributions from musicians like Ruppi Barnickel, Kevin Bonner, Lance Morgan, and others ensures a rich, textured listening experience. Each artist brings their unique touch, enriching the album’s sonic palette without overshadowing Horton’s vision.

In summary, “Pushbutton Romance” is a testament to Rich Arithmetic’s growth and maturity as an artist. It is an album that blends insightful storytelling with masterful musicianship, making it a must-listen for long-time fans and new listeners alike. The thoughtful arrangements, poignant lyrics, and collaborative spirit make this album a standout addition to Rich Arithmetic’s discography.
