(CD, 2021) No.4246

GAJOOB Review by Bryan Baker, :

A Sonic Adventure Through the Avant-Garde

The Godspunk series has long been a beacon for fans of experimental and underground music, and volume twenty-two is no exception. Released in 2021 under catalogue number PUMF 819, this double CD compilation showcases forty-eight tracks from nineteen innovative and diverse artists. With a combined running time of 147 minutes, “Godspunk Vol. 22” offers an immersive auditory experience that is both eclectic and boundary-pushing.

From the outset, the album is a testament to the vibrancy and diversity of the underground music scene. The compilation kicks off with contributions from Howl in the Typewriter, setting the tone with an intriguing blend of avant-garde sounds and thought-provoking lyrics. UNIT follows suit, delivering their signature mix of experimental rock and post-punk elements that challenge the conventional.

The Large Veiny Members and Nil by Nose infuse the compilation with a raw, unfiltered energy, while SAWGASM and Lettuce Vultures add layers of intensity and innovation. “Sex Demon” and “Dresden Kirk ft. the Taurus Board” further elevate the album’s eclectic nature, seamlessly blending genres and pushing sonic boundaries.

Dr. Awkward, AWARE, and Jeanie & the Kaprikorns offer a mix of quirky, offbeat tracks that provide a refreshing contrast to the more intense offerings. Their contributions highlight the playful and experimental spirit that permeates the entire compilation.

Lieutenant Caramel + Shaun Robert, Infected Youth, and Harsh Noise Movement bring a darker, more abrasive edge to the album, delighting fans of noise and industrial music. Bidoche Musique and Magic Bullet (our esteemed Mick Magic) continue this theme, delivering tracks that are both challenging and captivating.

Father Stone and Hermanos Guzanos introduce elements of punk and garage rock, grounding the compilation with their gritty, rebellious sound. Proud Fuckoo Band closes out the album with a flourish, leaving listeners eager for more.

“Godspunk Vol. 22” is an exploration of the vast and varied landscape of experimental music. Each track offers something unique, ensuring that there’s never a dull moment. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the Godspunk series or new to the world of underground music, this compilation is a must-have.
