Chad Maupin, a local illustrator known for capturing the essence of Fayetteville, has recently launched a new 32-page zine called Rant. The inaugural issue pays tribute to Chris “Clunk” Selby, a beloved local figure. Clunk, who has been a fixture in the community for over two decades, is celebrated for his contributions as the owner of Clunk Music Hall and Clunk Records, and more recently, as the operator of Clunk’s Hungry Express Wagon (CHEW).
The zine includes art, interviews, essays, and personal memories about Clunk, highlighting his impact on Fayetteville through various community efforts, especially during the pandemic. Maupin’s health issues have hindered his ability to work consistently, and proceeds from the zine and accompanying commemorative t-shirts will support him as he battles lung disease.
I got in on the pre-order batch and the t-shirt and and sticker are very cool (as you can see in the photo). Reading through the zine, it struck that my own town of Salt Lake City has a similarly beloved resident (Brad of Raunch Records) who has been a local fixture for punk kids over a few generations now, with a shop, a community radio show, etc.
The zine and t-shirts are available on Maupin’s website, big-bot.com. Also check out Chad’s other work while you’re there — very cool!
